Top 10 ways to ensure your best people will quit

Just saw this shared in facebook...

Most reasons the most talented and productive people flee a given workplace can be avoided. Here are common mistakes, along with better alternatives.

Here are 10 ways to guarantee that your best people will quit:

10. Treat everyone equally. This may sound good, but your employees are not equal. Some are worth more, because they produce more results. The key is not to treat them equally; it is to treat them all fairly.

9. Tolerate mediocrity. A-players don't have to or want to play with a bunch of C-players.

8. Have dumb rules. I did not say have no rules; I specified dumb rules. Great employees want to have guidelines and direction, but they don't want to have rules that get in the way of doing their jobs or that conflict with the values the company says are important.

7. Don't recognize outstanding performance and contributions. Remember Psychology 101: Behavior you want repeated should be rewarded immediately.

6. Don't have any fun at work. Where's the written rule that says work has to be serious? If you find it, rip it to shreds and stomp on it, because the notion that work cannot be fun is actually counterproductive. The workplace should be fun. Find ways to make work and/or the work environment more relaxed and fun, and you will have happy employees who look forward to coming to work each day.

5. Don't keep your people informed. You've got to communicate not only the good, but also the bad and the ugly. If you don't tell them, the rumor mill will.

4. Micromanage. Tell them what you want done and how you want it done. Don't tell them why it needs to be done and why their job is important. Don't ask for their input on how it could be done better.

3. Don't develop an employee retention strategy. Employee retention deserves your attention every day. Make a list of the people you don't want to lose and, next to each name, write down what you are doing or will do to ensure that person stays engaged and on board.

2. Don't do employee retention interviews. Wait until a great employee is walking out the door instead and conduct an exit interview to see what you could have done differently so they would not have gone out looking for another job.

1. Make your onboarding program an exercise in tedium. Employees are most impressionable during the first 60 days on the job. Every bit of information gathered during this time will either reinforce your new hire's "buying decision" (to take the job) or lead to "Hire's Remorse."

The biggest cause of "Hire's Remorse" is the dreaded employee orientation/training program. Most are poorly organized, inefficient, and boring. How can you expect excellence from your new hires if your orientation program is a sloppy amalgamation of tedious paperwork, boring policies and procedures, and hours of regulations and red tape?

To reinforce their buying decision, get key management involved on the first day and make sure your orientation delivers and reinforces these three messages repeatedly:

    • You were carefully chosen and we're glad you're here;
    • You're now part of a great organization;
    • This is why your job is so important.

    Wedding Video (Same Day Edit)

How lucky we are today that technology really makes everything possible.  Compared to weddings before, weddings today already have what they call SAME-DAY-EDIT Videos.  This video is the summary of what has happened on the ceremony and the early parts of your wedding.  Until now, I am still in awe of the result... still crying sometimes when I show this video to my friends and relatives #iyakinpadin

And finally, I was able to upload the same-day-edit video from our wedding.  Here it is.

    Happy 6th birthday Ate Yanis!

Yesterday was my niece's 6th birthday.  The family gathered together and prepared a mini celebration for her.   My dear cousins Tonts and Kalay and my brother Deks took over to prepare the food because I have appointments since the morning.  My hubby and I arrived 5:30pm and saw ate Yanis still not dressed, she didn't want to because the dress she was wearing was the dress that she was wearing when her mom left again for Australia last January 3.   Her classmate Mica and her family arrived shortly so I persuaded Yanis to change her dress immediately.

While I was dressing her up, we had a very heartfelt conversation:

Yanis:  Tita Lods, Kuya Carl and Ate Sam (Yanis cousins) have fever... They will not be here for my birthday.
Me: it's okay, they'll just visit when they are better.
Yanis: Tita Lods, this is my 1st birthday
Me: No ate yanis, this is your 6th birthday, kaya nga 6 years old ka na diba po?
Yanis: this is my first birthday without mommy, daddy, kuya Carl and Ate Sam...
Me: (speechless for a while)... Mommy will call you later and daddy will be here soon after his work is done.  They love you so much that's why they are working hard for you and Migs.
    Yanis: (silent)

Mamitz, Papa Lolo, tita Lich and tita Mitch arrived at 6PM and brought Amber's spaghetti and gelatin. We can really sense her sadness so we tried to cheer her up.  We sang the birthday song and she blew her candle.  Of course, we had a repeat of the birthday song for little Miggy para mag blow din sya ng candle kahit sa March pa birthday nya, then opened their gifts.

This is Mica, Yanis's bestfriend in school.  She somehow made Yanis felt happy, they danced and play together with the gifts.

I know Yanis is beginning to notice the absence of her mom, i saw her crying non-stop when my sister left compared to last year.  And she was still crying even after we reached their home.  She hugged me too tight that night.  I tried to convince her that her mom will be here soon again and I stayed with her until she fell asleep.

I still don't know how to tell my sister about this, I know it is also so hard for her to leave and she misses her family so much... Hope that she can already settle the papers very soon so they can be together again everyday.

    The Nurture Spa

Was surprised to see this still in draft... #latepost

Wedding preparation and the wedding itself is the most stressful yet fun experience for us couple.  The tiring days, the sleepless nights and the tears I shed to fight off the stress to accomodate all the requests and demands of our guests were all worth it.  I can't believe that a year of preparation ended just for few hours. What we couple said after the wedding.. "Yey, natapos din".

We really want to rest, as in rest, sobrang hinahanap ng mga katawan namin talaga ang rest.  Good thing, one pair from our sponsors gave us a Romantico Package in The Nurture Spa, still in Tagaytay.  We availed the package 2 days after the wedding because our families still stayed in another place in Tagaytay after the wedding.  Muntik pang hindi magiging exclusive because the siblings of hubby went with us to The Nurture Spa to checkout the place and they also loved it.  They were tempted to stay and avail the spa service, buti di natuloy.  What we did was to roam around the place, kulitan to the max and they left before dinner.

Lakad kalinga means walking in a pathway with different kinds and sizes of rocks in barefoot.

It seems very easy to look at but when you try it, you'll experience different sensations.  Sometimes the rocks are smooth, rough, tickling, painful, etc. and is very similar to our walks of life, you just need to stay focused, determined and hopeful that no matter how hard life is today, tomorrow will surely be better... Below are hubby, fritz my BIL, ged bf of my hubby's sister and their cousin elyzar.

Wonder what it feels like upon reaching the Yin-Yang?  It felt like your feet had a foot massage, it was actually so relaxing.

There's also a place for the kids and for the kids at heart.

After they left, we availed the Romantico package.  It is inclusive of the following: overnight stay in a VIP room, romantic dinner for two, 1 hour massage, 30 minutes footspa/facial, breakfast and lunch.

We were given the VIP room for our accomodation.  It's decorated with cute welcome note, bed of roses este rose petals and swan towels on our bed.  The restroom is as big as the size of the bedroom, it has huge bathtub and very wide windows. It was just too perfect for honeymoon.

We were advised to take an early dinner at 6PM since we are scheduled for the spa service at 8PM.  We had the most romantic candlelight dinner in the garden, served with delicious and healthy food and a glass of red wine which made the dinner even more romantic.  Toast!

When we went back to our room... The bed was again made up with another welcome note and free cookies... #sweet

The Nurture Spa doesn't have cable TV, but they have menu of DVDs where you can choose 3 movies. There's no telephone so you'll need to ring the bell from your door and someone will get you your chosen movies.  We started watching Shakespere in love when we heard a knock on our door.  The physical therapists informed us that it's time for our spa.  I don't have pictures of the spa area but all I can say is that it was one of the best massage I ever had. #SoRelaxing.  Then we went back to our place and had the best night ever... Sshhh! este Zzzz!

Woke up in the morning seeing my hubby still fast asleep, felt his heart, listened to his breathing and watched him for few more minutes... That moment was priceless! Was thanking God for giving this man to me, the man for me to love and respect...  His love for me is overflowing and I feel it everyday.  I woke him up then so we can prepare for breakfast.

We had a hearty and healthy breakfast and lunch then checked-out at 12 noon.  The experience in the Nurture Spa was unforgettable.  We were so pampered and really felt like VIPs.

Final verdict for this place: the place, the food, the people and the service are excellent.  #SarapUlitin

    Food trip in Baguio

Each place has their food that they can brag about, so we searched for restaurants during our stay in Baguio.  We avoided those that are always available here in the metro.  We went to SM Baguio of course just to checkout again the place but we just saw the usual restaurants.  I asked Mr. google and here are the results of the best restaurants in Baguio:

Choco-late de Batirol.  Located in the heart of Camp John Hay. Serves Filipino food with hot chocolate.  They have some other branches too, one you can find in Barbara  restaurant in Intramuros.  We grabbed our lunch here on our first day.

50's Diner.  Serves american food, shakes, steaks, pasta and sandwiches.  Price ranges from P150 and above.  The serving was so big, we were not given heads up so the result was... we couldn't finish everything.

Buffet breakfast in microtel. We consumed the free buffet breakfast for 2 mornings.  They have rice and ulams, french toasts, salads, omelettes, etc.  Buti din, di paulit-ulit yung mga food. The strawberry jam and the peanut butter are superb!

Oh my Khan Mongolian grill & hotpot.  We arrived here at 3PM so we were not able to try the mongolian grill because it is only open for lunch and dinner.  The food here are also so good, price ranges from P200 and above.

Little John's in Camp John Hay. This restaurant also offers American dishes.  Price ranges from P150-250.  They have paper mats and colors to scribble and draw while waiting for your food... I think my drawing skill is not that stagnant and it was not that bad afterall. :)

Other restaurants that we want to try next time: Oh my gulay, Rose Bowl, Cafe by the ruins and Hill Station.

    Baguio 2014

After the wedding, we really had no plan where to go for our honeymoon.  We were thinking of just driving to the north: Vigan-Laoag-Pagudpod-Baguio since I had almost two weeks off from the office.  But then the balikbayans overstayed and we couldn't leave just yet until they left last Wednesday... We only had 3 days at most to travel. So the plan was trimmed down to: Baguio-Vigan-Laoag.

We arrived in Baguio lunchtime last Thursday after 5 hours drive.  Yes, only 5 Hours going to Baguio and thanks to NLEX-SCTEX-TPLEX (exit to Paniqui)... Imagine hom much time you'll save if the TPLEX will all be operational, they say it will only be 4 hours to Baguio. Woot woot!

We checked-in at Microtel by Wyndham Hotel, rate: P4250 per night for a queen sized bed and a sofa, inclusive of breakfast, free wifi (in the lobby area), P100 charge for 24hour wifi access in your room which we didn't avail and complimentary drinks: water, coffee, tea, milk, hot choco.  What I love in Microtel is the friendliness of the staffs, the food and the location.  Microtel is just beside Victory liner bus terminal, and is very accessible to all our destination.

We had shopping on the first day we arrived in Baguio.  The Commisary (Mile Hi Center) in Camp John Hay is the place where you can buy imported goods at a lower price.  Afterwards we had food trip (will post separately for the restaurants that we dined-in).

The next day, we visit places... Places that we've been to 10 years ago.  The google map served as our GPS, hubby was the driver and i was the navigator.

Strawberry Field in La Trinidad, Benguet.  It is 7.5km away from the city and it took us an hour to reach our destination.   The sun was so intense although the place was still cold because we arrived at lunch time in the area so I bought the hat for P40. The last time we were here, it was not the season of strawberries, so we had no chance to see strawberries from its roots.  And now, we were so lucky that we came here on the right season.  Strawberry picking costs P400 for 1 kilo and buying 1 kilo of strawberries is just P150... So we chose the latter.  But the vendors allowed us to still go to the strawberry field and take pictures, I picked 1 piece of strawberry though, hahaha!

We also bought some brooms (Walis - double stitched) for pasalubong P280 for 3 pieces and tried the strawberry ice cream P25 each.

On our way back, we dropped by to the Bell Church.  It is my first time to be in a Chinese temple but the temple itself is closed and no picture taking was allowed inside.  So, i took the opportunity to have pictures on their park instead.

Afterwards, we went to the Good Shepherd to buy more pasalubong.  I know there's Good Shepherd in Tagaytay but they don't have the cashew brittle (P215 each), then we add some more of the choco flakes (P115 each).

Mines View park is just beside the convent so we also just dropped by and see if there's something new to see. Had some pictures with the famous St. Bernard (P50 for 4 shots).  I was scared because the dog was too big, but hubby is much more scared than me so I braved to have a picture alone with it.

And became Igorots for P10 unlimited shots.  And because hubby knows I have no experience riding a horse, he urged me to try the horse back riding (stationary lang.. #takotAko) also for P10 only.

We could really have the real horse back riding in the Wright Park just below Mines View park, but when we were there, i could not take the smell of the place, so we scrapped the idea.

We went to Ibay's store to buy silver earing for hubby, but he found nothing that suit his taste.  Then, we dropped by the Botanical Garden.  I was expecting lots of flowers in the area but found very few, as in parang wala nga eh.  Medyo pinagpawisan kami pag akyat sa pabalik sa mines view park so we already took off our jackets here.

We had our lunch at 3PM, then went to see the Black Market, we thought we could buy a lot of things there, but we just saw imported perfumes, soaps, etc, and money changers,  I can say it is just regular market and nothing special in there. We were not interested, so we looked for the Skyworld, the ukay-ukay that I went with Kate last 2011.  As expected, we were not able to buy anything because we are not both fond of buying in ukay-ukay... Ganda lang ng experience, so the next time may gustong magpasama, we can bring them to the area.

Went back to the hotel to freshen up then we went out to Camp John Hay for dinner.  On our way there, we saw Le Monet, the ever beautiful chandelier in their lobby is what I can always recall the first time I saw it.  I really liked to check-in at either Le Monet or The Manor Hotel sana but both were fully booked.  So for experience, we just dropped by the Le Monet hotel for a while and had some shopping in the stores beside it then went for a walk to checkout if we can buy some more in R.O.X before going to dinner.

We were supposed to checkout the night market in Harrison Road, another ukay-ukay which starts from 9PM until 2AM, pero tinamad na kami, we know we will not be buying anything from there and the weather was so cold that night, 14 degrees at 9PM so we chose to stay in the hotel.

The next morning, Saturday, we are supposed to drive down and go to Vigan. But we woke up late and i wasn't feeling very well, so i asked hubby if we can just go back home.  Hubby was telling me, I might be pregnant (i know he is so excited for a baby) because I missed my period that day (that was the first time i ever missed my period) but I know the feeling and it was just dysmenorrhea.  True enough, by today... I think my period is starting.  I am not showing na malungkot ako because of this... Still praying to God to bless us with a baby soon... Very soon sana.

So this is the end of our honeymoon trip, but we promised to make everyday a honeymoon. :)

    12-31-2013 Wedding Reception

What happened in the reception, I'll be telling the stories through pictures.  Below pictures show how my reception looked like before the party started.  Photos taken by Jops Espinili, a friend and the husband of my wedding coordinator kate:

    At the entrance

Table arrangement before the guests arrived

    Our love chair

    Wines

Before we arrived in the reception area, I know everyone was hungry that's why I asked my coordinator to make sure everyone gets to eat.  Appetizers, fruits etc were served while our AVP for the prenup countinuously played on the screen and the N-tune band played acoustic songs.  When we arrived, we were welcomed by the guests and the party started.

Because our wedding date was the night before the New Year, we opted to keep the program very short and divided it to two parts so the guests who wanted to leave early can still take their dinner.  The first part includes the traditional 1st dance of the couple... And while we stroll the dance floor, the guests lit up their sparkles.

The cutting of the cake and the wine toast...

Our coordinator surprisingly added a number wherein we will be saying our personal vows, and guess what? Hubby was prepared and I wasn't... Nyay!

Next, Picture taking with the couple and the most awaited part of all... The Dinner (sorry, i have no pictures yet)... While everyone was eating, we had the chance to say thank you to the guests and bade goodbye to those who will be leaving.

For the 2nd part of the party, our moms had their individual speech and I had a dance with my dad. Funny though, I was really trying not to cry and my dad was telling me not to cry and kept on nudging me with his shoulders so I will not cry, but i still did.  He just opened a topic so we'll revert our emotions to other things.

Then, I had a surprise number for my groom. This one I prepared (quite) by listening, but I had no chance to practice singing. I sang "Feels like home" by Chantal Kreviazuk.  #WalaNgAtrasan

Then, the garter and bouquet tossing... But we did some twist.  Instead of throwing the bouquet to bunch of single women and the garter to the bachelors, we made it into a kissin game.  We called in couples (not married yet) and the women were handed with red lipstick.  They need to kiss their partners and the pair with least kissmarks wins the game.  The least fortunate couple este the lucky couple Jeannine (sister of hubby) and Ged won the game.

The consequence was, the winning couple will do whatever the groom and bride will do, the usual stuffs like macho dancing, etc.)

Afterwards, the Same Day Edit Video was played where it showed the summary of the whole event (will post it in my next blog)... Then, the guests were asked to go outside to witness the fireworks display (this happened before the new year countdown). This is pretty much the end of the program, hope you also enjoyed the party like we did.

...But the real party where drinking and dancing are involved will just start. So brace yourself and wait for my next posts. :)

    12-31-2013

It is the 7th day after the biggest event of my life happened.  Until now, I still couldn't recall all that had happened on that night because all I know is I wanted to cry from happiness the whole time.  I am always a cry baby every time I attend weddings and true enough (as expected) I was crying and crying the whole time on my own wedding. #iyakin

The day before the wedding, both our families checked-in to Bali Village Hotel where our reception was held.  We didn't had the usual "pamamanhikan", so it was the only time both our families got along with each other after our announcement of our plan of getting married last June.  On that same night, it was the last time I was able to sleep with my family and cried myself to sleep.

I just don't know if it is normal for the bride to become so emotional but I was like that on that day. Thanks to my make-up artist Teejay Nonato, he was able to hide my "mugtong mata" because even before I had my make-up on, tears were streaming down my face.  Waterproof make-up surely did the job of preventing the smudges. (Location: bridal suite in Taal Vista).

And the time finally came, I reached Caleruega "The Transfiguration Chapel" and I needed to go down my bridal car (Mercedez Benz 1952 model by Royal Carriages)... my heart was pounding and I was telling myself a mantra, "I will not cry, I will not cry"... repeat to the nth time.  The first thing I asked my coordinator, "is my groom already there?".  There was so much mixed emotions when I knew he was already there waiting for me.  I was so excited for him to see me because he had really no idea what I will be wearing and how will I look like in my wedding dress (Wedding gown by Nina Ricci Geffe Couture).

I heard the song "Tadhana by UpDharmaDown" being played by N-Tune band and the entourage procession started.  And then, the door was closed and "One Love by Acel Bisa" started playing, as soon as the door opened, everything went silent, I can't recall hearing the music anymore.  I saw my mom and dad waiting for me to reached them and I was still trying to hold my tears as they walk me down the aisle.

I saw my groom crying as we approach the altar and I couldn't hold my tears any longer when my parents handed me to my man.  The ceremony was graced by Rev. Fr. Stephen Redillas and he made the ceremony even more meaningful not only for us couple but for everyone in the church.

We had our first kiss as husband and wife and the rest is history... i don't have the official photos yet, all these were just tagged pictures from my guests.
